New movement programme promotes mental wellbeing for Pacific communities

Vaka Tautua’s Community Support Services team in West Auckland has developed a new programme supporting the mental and physical health of Pacific peoples through active breath and movement. Group sessions are creating a sense of community and helping build confidence for those living with mental illness.

The idea for the ‘Movement for Mental Health and Wellbeing’ activities arose from techniques the team used during COVID lockdowns to reduce anxiety and lower the incidence of hospital readmission for service users experiencing mental distress.

According to the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, “Being physically active is proven to boost our wellbeing and decrease stress, depression and anxiety.” The team found a focus on fun and the use of mindfulness concepts helped them promote positive thinking patterns throughout the pandemic. Breathing techniques were encouraged as a lifeline tool to use when feelings of distress occur.

During Samoan Language Week in June, participants were welcomed to Vaka Tautua’s Pacific Hub in Mount Albert with songs and karakia, then treated to a variety of activities and exercises designed to raise awareness of the breath and encourage gentle movement with a Pacific flavour.

Community Support Workers Elia Aiaraisa and Angela Asekona led a demonstration of siva Samoa (Samoan dance) and showed visitors how to make ula lole – Samoan style lolly necklaces made to celebrate special occasions. Breathing exercises included singing in harmony and mindfulness techniques.

Team Leader Argentina Fatialofa says, “We’ve received good feedback from everyone who has attended our movement sessions so far. They have enjoyed the fun activities and were fully engaged. We see the group environment as helping to build self-esteem, bringing a sense of belonging that can lighten any feelings of loneliness.”

Vaka Tautua and the Mt Albert Community Club are now partnering together running the ‘Movement for Mental Health and Wellbeing’ activity once a week.
