Pacific Navigator modelling the way forward

Tevita Manuopangai Tuita, a Vaka Tautua Mental Health Navigator in the Wellington region, was recently invited to take part in the ‘Trust Us’ campaign developed by Te Awakairangi Health Network.

The organisation asked Pacific community leaders from the Hutt Valley to spread an important message, reassuring Pacific people that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective, free, and that health professionals are there to help talk it through.

The campaign included culturally appropriate messaging and resources in Pacific languages, with Tevita featuring as the model on the Tongan poster.

Tevita says he feels privileged and honoured to be part of the campaign and would like to share his message with the Pasifika community – “I would rather have the vaccine than the virus.”

Tevita joined Vaka Tautua a year ago, in October 2020, bringing with him more than 20 years’ experience in the mental health and disability sectors.

A Tongan community leader, Tevita’s spare time is spent helping and supporting community projects and events such as this public health initiative.

By taking part in the ‘Trust Us’ campaign, he hopes to encourage a high uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine by Pacific people in the Hutt Valley.

With the help of his fellow Pacific leaders, Tevita and his peers are inspiring their families, friends, and communities to protect themselves against COVID-19.
