Mr Martin vividly recalls his first day as secretary in 2007, at Vaka Tautua’s first annual general meeting.

“Phil Beilby (the inaugural Chief Executive Officer) got out his guitar and sang a song. And Alo (Dr Siale Foliaki), the first chair, asked if anyone knew the Lotto numbers… maybe he thought the new venture, the company, needed some luck,” laughs Mr Martin.

Mr Martin beams with great pride and admiration as he speaks about Vaka Tautua and its journey.

“Vaka Tautua has grown from strength to strength over the past fourteen years. It has been quite phenomenal,” says Mr Martin.

“I have been on many boards, but Vaka Tautua is special… I tell everyone about it! … and as the only palagi (European), I have been so fortunate to be involved… I have learnt so much, about Pacific peoples, and the love and commitment you have for your communities, to serve them. It’s very special.”

Mr Martin looks forward to spending more time with his family. He will, however, remain connected to Vaka Tautua as Secretary for its parent entities, PIASS Trust and Malologa Trust.

“You can’t get rid of me that easily,” laughs Mr Martin.

Recently-appointed Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Board, Cordelle Edwin, will take over the secretarial duties for the Board.
